Part-time Co-Response Clinician, Police

Job Description:

The Co-Response Mental Health Clinician is a “Co-Responder” with the Barnstable Police who will respond to calls with an on-duty police officer that include, but are not limited to individuals exhibiting signs of mental distress and/or opioid abuse and other substance abuse disorders. The clinician provides rapid crisis intervention to individuals in crisis, performs on-site assessments to determine an appropriate response, and facilitates diversion from the criminal justice system and emergency room as appropriate.

This job includes providing crisis intervention services and follow-up when clinically indicated to coordinate resources and support services as well as facilitating training for police officers to increase competencies in intervening with behavioral health crises.

The clinician will also represent the Barnstable Police Department at community events and public speaking engagements as requested, showcasing the importance of mental health services and community collaboration, cultivating a cooperative environment for crisis intervention.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide follow-up with persons served when clinically indicated
  • Maintain linkages with law enforcement and community agencies by providing documented case consultation, program development, and problem resolution
  • Assist the person in crisis with engagement of needed services, utilizing community-based health, behavioral health, and social services
  • Provide information and referral services to individuals and families.
  • Maintain necessary documentation, data entry, and records in accordance with program requirement
  • Represent the program in a prepared and professional manner at community events, task forces, and public speaking engagements
  • Provide and/or coordinate as needed training to police personnel regarding mental illness, substance use, trauma spectrum disorders, and other behavioral health topics as identified
  • Attend and actively participate in community meetings as requested
  • Provide community outreach as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Level Clinical Degree
  • MA State licensure as LICSW or LMHC
  • Experience and training in forensic mental health or criminal justice preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years post-Master’s clinical experience in a crisis intervention, forensic mental health, or jail diversion program clinician role
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed responses to mental health crises
  • Knowledge of MA laws relevant to individuals experiencing mental health crises
  • Knowledge of MA laws relevant to police-response to individuals in crisis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of varying social and behavioral health services and the nature of the treatment, rehabilitation, and support they offer.
  • Must adhere to professional principles and codes of ethics
  • Professional writing and verbal communication skills
  • High degree of personal organization, attention to detail, and time management skills
  • Ability to assess children and adults in their homes and apartments with stairs
  • Use of personal cellular telephone for work communication.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel for work

$35.00 hourly, no benefits. Grant funded position.
